What IS Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese spiritual practice based in meditation that also has therapeutic applications. Reiki meditation practice for the practitioner helps him/her to let go of anger, worry, fear, and stress to uncover his/her best inner qualities of peace, gratitude and compassion. The goal of Reiki self-practice is living a happier, healthier life. Daily Reiki practice also increases the practitioner’s ability to support others with peace and compassion, even in the cases of serious health issues or difficult situations. Sharing Reiki with others involves touch therapy in the case of humans and sharing meditation in the case of animals. The goal of offering Reiki to others is to promote relaxation and stress-relief, which in turn promotes self-healing of body, mind, and spirit.

What Can Reiki Do For My Dog?

  • Enhances overall well-being.
Just like people, even healthy pets can have occasional physical, emotional, and mental imbalances that, if left untreated, can manifest as illness. Periodic Reiki treatments can help maintain your pet’s natural state of well-being and balance.
  • Reiki can help in all situations.  Whether it be that they are sick, dying, having surgery, are in pain, growing old, having emotional issues, or for any other reason, Reiki can be a welcome relief, comfort, and joy for your animal to receive.
  • Alleviating anxiety, stress, nervousness by producing a state of calm.
Reiki can assist in an easier transition for pets who struggle with change in their life or other things that cause your pet to feel uneasy.

  • Reiki is offered as integrative, adjunctive (supportive) care in addition to conventional veterinary care of animals. Animals of all kinds can experience the ‘relaxation response’ as humans do, with similar potential benefits.
  • Strengthens the immune system for cancer therapies.
Cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation present stress to an already compromised immune system. Reiki strengthens the immune system to better deal with this additional stress. It helps alleviate or prevent the side effects of conventional cancer treatments and provides pain relief.

  • Accelerates healing following surgery or illness.
Reiki can alleviate and prevent side effects of conventional medications such as pain killers & antibiotics.  Reiki provides pain relief and relaxation to facilitate and enhance the body’s natural healing response.

  • Increases trust and bonding between you and your pet.
People and pets often mirror each other’s physical and emotional states. Animals are natural healers and sometimes take on their person’s problems, often in an attempt to heal them. This happens because of the deep bond shared between a pet and his or her person. Because of the shared energy in such a close relationship, energetic imbalances are shared as well. For optimum healing, joint treatments for people and their pets can often be beneficial.

  • Can help with behavior issues by promoting relaxation and stress reduction.
Many behavior issues are caused by stress. Reiki has a calming effect on the pet and may help make the pet more receptive to training and behavior modification. Reiki is extremely beneficial for animals with a history of abuse. The gentle touch and the energy can help restore trust in animals who have learned to associate touch with being hurt.

  • Provides comfort and relieves pain, anxiety, and fear for terminally ill animals.
Reiki is a wonderful way to facilitate the transition for terminally ill animals and their owners. Often, animals will not allow themselves to transition because they intuitively feel that their person is not ready to let them go. Joint Reiki treatments for the pet and his or her person can help both through this difficult time by enhancing the bond and allowing a gentle transition.

  • Getting pets through depression or bereavement.
Pets grieve like humans.  When they lose a member of the pack that loss is not just felt by the humans. Our dogs can have a harder time recovering from a loss.  Reiki can help instill balance and calmness in your pet’s body.

  • Reiki can work in conjunction with training sessions and can be an integral part of any behavior modification plan as Reiki can help speed up the desired results.
Animals are also affected by their people’s health issues, and in fact, sometimes an animal’s issue is really their person’s issue. By sharing Reiki with animals' people, we can help create a healing possibility between the person and their animal, deepen their bond and nurture their heart-to-heart connection. When we are present with our animals, with an open heart and mind, this is the ideal space for us to nurture healthy relationships, to learn from one another and to support each other to live a happier and healthier life.

I achieved my Reiki Practitioner’s Master certification in 2017, but I have technically been practicing Reiki on humans and animals for almost 20 years. One of the wonderful aspects of the gentle, meditative approach of Reiki is that it can be shared with any animal, no matter their level of trust for humans. Reiki can help even the most traumatized animals relax and feel a strong sense of wellbeing. This is important in creating not only healing of body, mind, and spirit, but also Reiki creates the first step in healing the animal/human relationship.
I have seen Reiki bring peace and comfort to animals who are in physical pain, lessen and relieve emotional stress and even bring peace to the dying process. Reiki brings healing in the form of peace and balance—in other words, it is not a “cure” for this or that problem, but don’t our bodies, minds and spirits heal at their best when we are relaxed and comfortable? Reiki practitioners do not diagnose issues, and in fact do not need to know what the problem is because our approach and purpose is always the same. This is because healing is about “becoming whole,” and this is something that we all can do—even in the presence of disease. It is this wholeness and harmony of the entire being that Reiki uncovers, and that makes our self-healing abilities shine. In this way, it also makes any and every condition more manageable.
